Filming Activity on Palos Verdes Drive South and at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park and Pelican Cove Park on February 24th

Motorists, bicyclists, visitors and nearby residents should be aware that there is filming activity scheduled on Palos Verdes Dr. S. (between Hawthorne Blvd. and Terranea Way) and at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park and Pelican Cove Park on Tuesday, February 24th. This filming activity is likely to result in traffic delays on Palos Verdes Dr. S. and Palos Verdes Dr. W. throughout the day.

The feature film being shot is a period piece set in the 1950s. Driving shots will be filmed in the eastbound lanes of Palos Verdes Dr. S. between Terranea Way and the entrance to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center (PVIC). To achieve a period-correct look, modern traffic signs and pavement markers will be removed or masked to give the appearance of a 2-lane coastal highway in the 1950s. Two (2) of the driveway entrances to Pelican Cove Park will also be temporarily blocked and “dressed” with prop foliage and/or fences. To accommodate these driving shots, all traffic on Palos Verdes Dr. S./Palos Verdes Dr. W. between Terranea Way and Hawthorne Blvd. will be diverted into the westbound/northbound lanes. The road closures are expected to begin between midnight and 1:30 AM on Tuesday, February 24th and continue throughout the day. Filming in the roadway is expected to be done by 7:00 PM, with the roadway re-opened to traffic sometime between 9:30 PM and midnight. The Public Works Department has reviewed the traffic control plan for this film shoot, and expects to issue the encroachment permit today. Public Works Staff will be responsible for the removal and replacement of traffic signs, which will be paid for by the production. In order to provide as much advance notice to motorists as possible, message boards will be posted on Hawthorne Blvd., Palos Verdes Dr. S. and Palos Verdes Dr. W. this week. Temporary "NO PARKING" signs will also be posted in the Pelican Cove parking lot at least seventy-two (72) hours in advance of the start of filming activity.

Cast and crew parking for this film shoot will be provided in the overflow lot at City Hall and/or at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, where the production will also be filming “plate shots” of the cove and Portuguese Point for photographic special effects in the film. Due to filming activity during early morning and late evening hours, nearby neighbors surrounding the parking locations will be notified about this film shoot. The filming will involve a total cast and crew of 50 persons. With the exception of Pelican Cove Park, public access to the City's parks and property will be maintained during the shoot, and members of the City's Recreation & Parks and Public Works Staff will be on the site during filming activities.
